YOUR STORYBOX

Prepare a story box with elements that make children think about the subject of the story. For example:

• common school objects

• a puppet monster

• flashcards showing: a school building, a school bus and a forest

• numbers flashcards 1-10

PROCEDURE

Pre-reading

Show students the storybox and explain that it contains elements related to today's story. Start pulling objects out one by one and elicit their name. Ask children to repeat the words with you. Review numbers and ask children to count back from 10 providing little help.

Ask children to think about the relationship between a school and a forest. Accept all answers but give extra attention to the answer "the school is near a forest".

Reading

Show students the inside cover, point to the teachers and ask "who are they?". Then point to the trees and ask "what are they?". Then ask " who is hiding in the trees?". Start reading or telling the story. Telling can be helpful if you need to simplify language or you wish to give your own interpretation of the story but, in this case, reading is better as you can make the most of the rhyming text. Through rhymes, children will be able to predict how many teachers are left at each page.

ACTIVITIES

Activity 1

Skill: remembering and understanding

Ask students questions on the plot of the story. For instance: "who are the protagonists of the story" (A: 10 teachers), "where does the story take place?" (A: in the forest) "who else is in the forest?" (A: some monsters).

Discuss what is the reason behind the decision of walking through the forest (A: teachers have missed the bus).

Activity 2

Skill: sequencing information

Ask students to divide their page in nine boxes (a table3x3), number boxes from 1-9 and draw a different monster in each box.

Then ask children to colour the monsters according to the order they appear in the story. If children are young you can discuss colours with them before they colour (A: light blue, orange, green, red, yellow, purple, dark blue, pink, blue). Remember: teacher n. 10 is the one who is not kidnapped by the monster, she is the one who scolds them and teaches them school rules.

Once the colouring activity is finished, ask children "what colour is monster n.1?" or "what number is the orange monster?".

Activity 3

Skill: TPR & active listening - learning in motion

Teachers move around the forest according to the environment. Explain to children that they are going to be like the teachers and they are going to walk in the forest. Explain that there are different words to say "walk", depending on how you move.

Elicit the following words and show the movement:

• skipping

• hiking

• walking in a line

• hopping

• strolling

• sneaking

Test students' understanding by repeating the words in random order and asking them to perform the different walks.

Now explain that you are going to read the story again and, as they listen, they need to perform the correct walk. For example, when they hear skipping they need to start performing the action and continue listening to the story until they hear the next word, and so on.
